Grace Meng was born on October 1, 1975, in Queens, New York, and was raised in the Bayside and Flushing sections of the Borough. The woman is Taiwanese origin as well as the child of Jimmy Meng, an Assemblyman and Shiao-Mei. She went to Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School and Stuyvesant High School as an young adolescent. She earned an B.A. Degree in her home at the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctor from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University. One of her mentors in the beginning was Susan Wu Rathbone (1921-2019) she was the creator of the Queens Chinese Women’s Association.

Meng challenged Young again in 2008. In September of 2008 she beat Young during the Democratic primary 59%-41 percent. She won the election in November 2008 by defeating Young again in the same manner, this time as the Independence Party nominee, 88%-12 percentage. Then, in 2010, she was able to win her second term without opposition.

Meng was the author of the Reverse Mortgage Act of 2009 that prohibited proceeds received from reverse mortgages from being considered as income, so senior citizens can get their partial property tax exemption. Seven other of her pieces of legislation were signed into law.

In June 2012, Meng faced fellow Assembly member Rory Lancman and New York City Council member Elizabeth Crowley in a primary election for New York’s 6th congressional district and won. She received the endorsement of the Queens County Democratic party. On November 6, 2012, Meng won the race for New York Congressional District 6 against Republican member of the New York City Council Dan Halloran, making her the first Asian American elected to Congress from New York.

Grace Meng (Chinese: Meng Zhao Wen on the 1st of October 1975) is an American politician and lawyer serving in the capacity of the Democratic Member of the United States House of Representatives and representing New York’s 6th congressional district, which is located in the New York City borough of Queens that includes Bayside, Flushing, Forest Hills, Fresh Meadows, Glendale, Kew Gardens, Maspeth, Middle Village, and Rego Park. In the past, she was an elected Member of the New York State Assembly, which represented the 22nd assembly district located in Flushing, Queens. The first Asian American to be elected to Congress from New York.

The father of Meng’s, Jimmy Meng, was elected in 2004 to the 22nd assembly district. He became the very first Asian American to be elected to the state legislature during New York State history. Then, he was accused of wire fraud in an FBI investigation into a sting. Jimmy Meng was elected for one term but decided to not run for an election in the year 2006. Grace Meng ran for Assembly to succeed her father, but was removed off the ballot after Democrat Ellen Young challenged her residency status. In the end her residency issues in her district were solved. Ellen Young succeeded Jimmy Meng and was elected in January of 2007. Jimmy Meng later admitted to wire fraud as part of an alleged corrupt scheme.

In 2009, Meng was named one of City & State’s “New York City Rising Stars: 40 Under 40”.
