Govinda K.C. Biography

Govinda K.C. is one of the most popular and richest Philanthropist who was born on March 25, 1957 in Ramechhap District, Nepal. Govinda K.C. began his studies in the Institute of Medicine to be Health Technician (H.A. ) (which is the equivalent to Physician Assistants in the US following the completion of his high school education at the highly regarded Budhanilkantha School. He was unaware of the fact that he was taking the first step towards becoming an MD, however upon the completion of his H.A. He was awarded an Ministry of Education scholarship to take a course for an M.B.B.S. at the University of Bangladesh in Rajshahi Medical College. After graduating, he went back to Nepal and was employed with Bir Hospital. After that, he completed his further studies (M.S.) from Bangladesh in Dhaka University to become an orthopedist. While he wished to work in a hospital that was tertiary and there was an insufficient number of orthopedists Kathmandu the plans were drawn up for him to be transferred to a rural hospital , where there was no facility for practicing orthopedics. He left Bir Hospital and was accepted into with the Institute of Medicine as a volunteer in 1994.

Doctor. KC sat on his Eleventh Fast until his death on the 24th of July, 2017 with a seven points of demand for medical education reform. Dr. KC has asked to incorporate the Kedar Bhakta Mathema’s committee’s recommendations into the upcoming Medical Education Bill.

On 10 January 2018, he was released on general date without bail by the Supreme Court. The Court ordered to enquire the controversy of Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli’s citizenship and the case of Dr. Shashi Sharma would be reopened. Dr. K.C.’s lawyer Surendra Bhandari told on K.C.’s behalf that K.C. had accused the Chief Justice Parajuli of his corrupt actions. Similarly, K.C. on his release told:

Later that evening, the Supreme Court ordered his arrest for contempt of court. He was arrested by the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police from TU Teaching hospital, where the hunger strike was being staged, and taken to the Singha Durbar Police Circle. Nepal Medical Association (NMA) demanded instant release of Dr. K.C. and condemned the incident as being gravely sad. NMA stated that Dr. K.C. has brought positive changes in the medical sector through his hunger strike. On 9 January 2018, K.C. was presented before the SC and a hearing was scheduled for 10 January. K.C. remained in the custody till the hearing. In his statement at the court, KC stated that “CJ Parajuli had lobbied and secured a job for his nephew at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) as the commission’s legal counselor following a SC decision in favour of the former CIAA chief commissioner Lokman Singh Karki.”

In the meantime, the professor’s health declined further. After Nepal’s government Nepal was forced to bow to pressure and agreed to most of the plan the professor ended his fast, along with his supporters, the Nepal Medical Association and other supporters of the movement decided to withdraw the planned protest measures. He was on a sixth fast until his death on the 24th of August 2015 to the 6th of September 2015, when the government, is heavily influenced by corrupt merchants and politicians with no intent tried every means to allow the medical schools be unregulated and undermine and destroying the Mathema report. The fast was again concluded with 11 commitments by the government.He took part in the eighth fast against wrongdoings by CIAA and to reform medical education from 10 July 2016 and continues to do so till today because legislators and government officials have not taken action publicly in intetest.

In January 2014, K.C. started a new hunger strike in protest against the appointment of a new dean at IoM which was not based on seniority, along with other complaints. To support the cause the medical association of Nepal has shut down all hospitals, with the exception of emergency services all over the country. It was the Nepal Medical Association called for the resignation of all doctors across the nation and more than 100 professors and doctors quit. Doctors have announced free medical camps at public spaces. These actions collectively appear to be working which is why K.C. broke his fast.

Dr Govinda KC initiated his 15th fast-unto-death, in Jumla on June 30, 2018 to protest against alternations made to the Medical Education Ordinance Replacement Bill, among other issues by the government led by K P Oli.
