Schwarz has been a professor for the Hochschule fur Musik “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” since 1986. He was a judge for the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in 2004. He is a resident of Leipzig.
In recent years, Schwarz has been appearing as conductor. He formed his own ensembles Concerto Vocale Leipzig in 1984 and the Sachsisches Barockorchester (Saxon Baroque Orchestra) in the year 1990. In his capacity as guest conductor,, he collaborated with the orchestra and choir at the Gewandhaus. He established along with gambists Siegfried Pank (deand organist Hans Christoph Becker-Foss a trio of baroque musicians for the purpose of performing predominantly music from Bach’s Bach family, however they also perform different Baroque music.

Schwarz’s father was the Cantor at St. Paul Church in Zwickau and was able to get the opportunity to begin his musical journey at an early age. His musical journey began in 1964 when he joined the choir of the Thomanerchor, a boys’ choir from Leipzig established in 1212 and led by Johann Sebastian Bach, among other things, the Thomaskantor. Schwarz has been a part of the choir ever since, in a variety of activities. After completing the church music program through the College of Church Music in Dresden He then attended the Hochschule fur Musik “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig and sang with Gerda Schriever and organ along with Wolfgang Schetelich [de] and Hannes Kastner, as well as conductors with Max Pommer and Hans-Joachim Rotzsch. Then he pursued private lessons in the company of Peter Schreier, Hermann Christian Polster and Helmuth Rilling.
After graduating, he began his career as a cantata and oratorio singer. In 1979, he was commissioned by Hans-Joachim Retzsch as the director of the Thomanerchor’s vocal section and also served as an interim and deputy cantor in the years of 1992 2002/03, 1999 and. He also was appointed as an assistant conductor to Georg Christoph Biller. Schwarz performed with conductors including John Eliot Gardiner, Philippe Herreweghe, Peter Schreier, Martin Haselbock, and with groups like the Gewandhausorchester and the Dresdner Kreuzchor. Schwarz has appeared in concerts at the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Musikverein and also across Finland, USA, Finland and Japan. He recorded a number of Bach cantatas along with Gardiner in the context of Bach Cantata pilgrimage. Together with the Thomanerchor, led by Biller, the Bach cantatas were recorded by Biller. Es erhub it’s a Streit and BWV 19 Gott der Herr ist Sonn and Schild, BWV 79 in addition to Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80. the Mass in B minor , and The Vox Christi in the St John Passion. The Bach solo cantatas were recorded in bass BWV 56, 82 and 158, with the Thomanerchor with the direction of Michael Schneider and his orchestra La Stagione.
On June 9, 2016 he was selected as Thomaskantor in a term lasting until 2021.
