Nixon quit his post as President at the annual Meeting at the Annual Meeting on February 26th, 2014 and following 13 years as the chief executive officer, He resigned on August 1st of 2014. He was succeeded in both positions by David McKay who was previously the Group Director for Personal & Commercial Banking.

Nixon was named president of the Royal Bank of Canada on April 1, 2001. He was also appointed Chief Executive Officer on August 1st 2001. He succeeded John Cleghorn in both capacities. At 44, when he was named chief executive officer, Nixon was the youngest to lead an important Canadian bank. In September of 2004, Nixon initiated a major overhaul of RBC.

Nixon was hired in 1979 with Dominion Securities in Toronto and worked in global marketsand investment banking, and later moved to Tokyo to oversee the company’s operation in Japan. Dominion Securities was acquired by Royal Bank of Canada in 1987. Nixon came back to Toronto in 1989 as the director in charge for the Investment Banking Division and in 1995, he was named head of Global Investment Banking. The year 1999 saw Nixon was appointed chief executive officer for RBC Capital Markets and a part of the Royal Bank’s Executive Committee.
