Gordon Greer (born 14 December 1980) is a Scottish professional footballer who is a defensive player. Greer has been a player in the clubs of Clyde, Blackburn Rovers (two time periods), Stockport County, Kilmarnock (two times), Doncaster Rovers, Swindon Town and Brighton & Hove Albion throughout his career. Greer also took part in 11 international games for Scotland between 2013 and 2016.

On July 10, 2010, following several weeks of speculation, and numerous requests for written and verbal communication from Greer the idea was made that he travel into Brighton & Hove Albion on the next day for an examination to decide on an agreement to join the Seagulls with a reported price of P250,000 over a 3-year agreement. The agreement was not finalized until the following day which was the day Greer was able to complete his move to the Seagulls. On August 4, 2010it was discovered the fact that Brighton Manager Gus Poyet had given Greer the role of captain for the 2010-11 season.

On 21 May 2013, Greer was called up to the Scotland squad for the first time for the 2014 World Cup qualifier versus Croatia. Greer received a second call- up on 23 August 2013. Greer made his international debut later that year, becoming the oldest player to make his first appearance for Scotland since Ronnie Simpson in the 1960s. Greer made his first competitive appearance in October 2014, partnering Russell Martin in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match versus Poland. Greer made 11 appearances for Scotland in total, with his last cap coming in June 2016.

Greer was released by Brighton at the end of the 2015–16 season. Greer then signed a one-year contract with Blackburn Rovers. and his league debut was on 6 August 2016 versus Norwich City at Ewood Park. Greer was released by Rovers at the end of the 2016–17 season, during which the Ewood Park club were relegated to League One.

Greer was made Brighton debut during the first match that season the 14th of August 2010 against Rochdale after having served a two-match ban, but was dismissed after just 51 minutes of violent behaviour in a draw of 2-2. The goal of Rochdale was a penalty resulting from Greer’s red card. Greer later helped lead Brighton into winning their League One title and promotion to the Championship in the same season. He also was the club’s captain during this season. Greer made his debut Seagulls goal in a 2-0 victory against Barnsley in the month of October in 2011. On January 12, 2012 Greer got another straight yellow card after violent behaviour in Brighton’s win of 3-0 against Southampton and was sent off taking place just three minutes prior to the end of the game. In the final stages of the season, Greer was the subject of an offer from Barnsley which was rejected and Poyet later said that he didn’t want to be on auction.

Greer played for a time on loan at Stockport County, scoring once against Wycombe Wanderers before returning back to Scotland in order to join Scottish Premier League club Kilmarnock. Greer first gained international recognition after being selected by Scotland B against Poland B back in the month of December. He also played against Republic of Ireland B in November of 2006.

In July 2007 Greer was signed by Doncaster Rovers after he rejected an offer to renew his contract from Kilmarnock. Greer’s first season with Doncaster was marred by numerous injuries, and he was limited to just six games during the 2007-08 season. However, Greer was able to get his goal in the first game for Doncaster against Bournemouth. In the 2008-09 season, Greer was signed by League One club Swindon Town on a loan of one month period, which was later extended to an additional two months thanks to the financial support of the TrustSTFC’s Red Army Fund. When he returned in Doncaster, Greer was released from his contract on the 7th of May 2009, having made just 12 games over two seasons at the club.

Following his release from Doncaster, Greer soon agreed a two-year contract with Swindon Town on a free transfer in July 2009, having impressed after his loan spell at the club. After officially joining the club, Greer was announced as the club’s captain for the 2009–10 season. On 17 May 2010, Greer was shown a straight red card for a high tackle in the play-off 2nd leg versus Charlton Athletic, that Swindon went on to win on penalties. Greer’s sending off meant that he was suspended from the play-off final versus Millwall on 29 May 2010.
