Her debut film was at the age of 16 in 1998, with her Hindi language feature Prem Aggan, produced and directed by the acclaimed film star Feroz Khan. A friend suggested that she try a screen test to play the part, Sikander so impressed Feroz Khan that she got the part, even though she was already confirmed. Despite the huge publicity, the film, that also included her son, Fardeen Khan’s first film film, was a critic and box-office fail. One critic, however, praised her performance on screen and said “[Sikander is] friendly to the viewers’ eyes.”

Shama Sikander was born Makrana, Rajasthan, India as the daughter of Gulshan who was a housewife, and Sikander Gesawat who was a supplier of marble and currently practices Ayurveda. At the age of 9, her family relocated from the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra, where she lived with her siblings younger than her, Khalid, Rizwan Sikander along with Salma (born 1990). Sikander has stated on television that the first period in Mumbai were very difficult, and even mentioning that there were times when “there was no food in the house to feed the family”.
