He won his Daman as well as Diu seat at the time of the Lok Sabha election, standing as an Indian National Congress candidate. He won 24,543 votes (50.62 percent of the votes cast by the constituents). He quit his position in the Indian National Congress on 26 December 1997 as did three other members of the parliament. He was a member of with the Bharatiya Janata Party on 20 January 1998, as did B.P. Maurya and Mohanbhai Sanjibhai Delkar. On the 15th of March 2004, the Central Election Committee of BJP approved Tandel for its presidential candidate for the Daman and Diu seat of 2004, the Lok Sabha election. Tandel came in second having received 26,9116 votes. Tandel ran in his 2009 Lok Sabha election as a Nationalist Congress Party candidate. Tandel received 2,144 votes (3.15 percent) from Daman and Diu. Daman and Diu district. In 2011, he was president of Daman’s NCP Daman unit. Daman.
