In 2008-09, he appeared much less frequently, having only played 17 games as a rosanero, most of them during the final period of the season. In June 2009, the club announced they had agreed to an extension of two years for the local hero, 37, and Palermo native who will wear the rosanero shirt until June 2011. However, during the 2009-10 season, he was given only a few opportunities with the team’s first squad, playing just seven times in the team’s Serie A season. In June of 2010, it was confirmed that Giovanni Tedesco would be retiring from football and the appointment of US Palermo’s next manager of the team.
On 26 June 2012, Tedesco amicably parted company with Palermo in order to pursue a head coaching career. The next day he was announced as new coach of Lega Pro Seconda Divisione club Foligno, but he was sacked after four matches.
On 6 April 2014, Tedesco was assigned as the new manager for Floriana FC. He then switched to another Maltese team, Birkirkara, also coaching former Palermo teammate Fabrizio Miccoli.
On the 8th of January, 2006 Tedesco took part in his 500th professional game on his home debut against Lazio The team won 3-1. Tedesco scored the second goal. The contract he signed with Palermo which was scheduled for expiration in June of 2007 was renewed for an additional year following the day of the final match. The club later said that he not have accepted offers from other clubs to stay with Palermo and was hoping to finish his career as a Rosanero. On the 10th of April, 2008, he signed a contract with Palermo for a one-year extension to his deal with the Rosanero.

Despite having a family roots in Palermo, Tedesco was initially turned down by the local team, Palermo, because of his small build. He was then relocated to Reggina. In Reggina the player quickly became a regular player in the year the year 1990. After three seasons at Reggina (1 for Serie B, 2 in the Serie C1), Tedesco moved to Fiorentina in 1993. He helped the team be crowned in the Serie B league. In the following season the team made his debut with Serie A in a 2-1 victory over Cagliari on September 4, 1994.
In January of 2004, Tedesco was signed by Genoa of Serie B in an attempt to build the team up to finish the season. The team saw the rossoblu fight for move into Serie A. The problem was that Tedesco did not make it to Genoa when he was joined by Serse Cosmi who was his former coach at Perugia in the next season. He was replaced by Luigi De Canio who had struggled to bring the team to the top spots on the table. Genoa ended up winning Serie B in 2005. However , the club was denied promotion, and instead was relegated into Serie C1 due to alleged match fraud. Following the relegation to Serie C1, Tedesco chose to remain in Genoa and play in Genoa for the first part of the 2005-06 season , before signing a contract with Palermo that he could not have ever turned down.
After a few months as team manager of Palermo, Tedesco was moved into the youth coaching staff, initially working alongside youth system chief Rosario Argento as his aide; later in September 2011 Tedesco took his first coaching job, as head of the under-17 Allievi Regionali team for Palermo.
