Despite being the leader of with the North Stars with 32 starts during the 1984-85 campaign, the 34-year-old Meloche was getting a huge increase in his workload by netminders Don Beaupre and Roland Melanson who were acquired by the New York Islanders during the season. Since his contract was up and two netminders who were much younger in contract the rights of Meloche were sold for the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers had Grant Fuhr and Andy Moog permanently in the Oilers net, the deal seemed odd and, not surprisingly, Meloche was moving again, and never played a single game for Edmonton. In the 1985-86 seasons, the Oilers were able to send Meloche to Pittsburgh as part of the deal that brought Marty McSorley in Edmonton.

In the junior league, he played for the Verdun Maple Leafs, and was loaned to the Quebec Remparts at the 1970 Memorial Cup, Meloche was the 70th pick in the draft of the amateurs in 1970 selected to be the first choice of the Chicago Black Hawks. His first professional season played mostly with the Flint Generals in the International Hockey League and the exception of two games with Chicago. It was a tough time for the Black Hawks were strong in goal, thanks to Tony Esposito, so Meloche was sent for his former team, the California Golden Seals, one of the weaker teams that the league has. In his first year with the Seals in 1971-72, he had an impressive goals-against ratio of 3.33 and he threw out four shutouts which included one shutout against Boston Bruins, then a league-leading powerhouse. The Seals’ fortunes continued get worse, but Meloche performed very well as the team’s top goalie. He had to deal with a lot of pressure for the next four seasons, which included the Seals changing their name to they became the Cleveland Barons. In the following two years, Meloche was a solid back-up to the Barons but only with an improvement to the team.
After the Barons union together with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978, Meloche was Minnesota’s primary goalie, and he enjoyed the most successes there. He played for eight seasons with Minnesota’s North Stars and appeared in the NHL All-Star game in 1980 and 1982. Minnesota enjoyed success in playoffs too, including participation in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1981 and semi-finals in the years 1980 and 1984.
Following his retirement from playing, Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989 to 2006 and also served as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was on the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991, 1992 and 2009. Meloche and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a professional ice hockey player who played 74 NHL games between 2000 and 2007 for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers.
