He is a businessman who lives in Calgary and was inducted into the Northern Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. He also had his Gerry Dattilio Sportsfield named in his honor at Laval, Quebec, in tribute to his outstanding Chomedy High School playing days.
The year 1975 saw Dattilio became the first territorial exempted player from the Montreal Alouettes, but after an injured list, he was let go in September. The following month he joined the Toronto Argonauts. He only played in one match for the Argos and didn’t record any stats. The following game, the player was let go by the Argonauts and then returned to the Alouettes and was the third quarterback in the lineup behind Sonny Wade and Joe Barnes. Additionally, he was a utility player. Dattilio returned punts, but took the opportunity to play more in the position of quarterback in 1978. Although he was the leader of the team in attempts to pass with 142, he also had 78 completions that season, he was ranked second in passing yards, with 1120. Dattilio also scored five touchdowns and nine interceptions. In 1979, Barnes was the obvious starting quarterback and with a strong offense, there were not any opportunities for Dattilio to take part. In the year 1980, things changed when struggling Barnes was transferred with the Saskatchewan Roughriders after six games. In that season, Dattilio was an all-star quarterback, throwing the most yards in the league, with 19 touchdowns and 2892 yards and receiving the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian Award and was the nominee from the east to receive the league’s Most Outstanding Player Award. He was averaging 5 touchdowns to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on September 21 in 1980. The following season was marked by Dattilio reduced to a backup position the direction of NFL superstar quarterback Vince Ferragamo. However, Ferragamo struggled throughout the 1981 season, and Dattilio had enough success to record the total of 1095 yards in aerials. In 1982, prior to his debut season, he was traded the Calgary Stampeders. The following year Dattilio threw for 2788 yards. This was the last time that a Canadian quarterback threw over 2000 yards in a single season. Dattilio finished 194 of 387. He scored only 11 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. 1983 saw him primarily as a backup for first second year QB Bernard Quarles, but got enough time to throw 1213 yards. In March of 1984 Dattilio got traded to Alouettes who used him as an extra backup or third-string quarterback over two seasons.

He was a student at in the University of Northern Colorado playing for the Bears from 1972 until 1974. He was the leader of the Bears in running as a quarterback between 1972 and 1973, and was the leader of his team’s passing yardage the year 1973 (1,367 yards and 18 touchdowns) as well as 1974 (1,367 yards 14 touchdowns). He is ranked as 10th in the Bears record for the most passing yards in history with 2,953 passing yards . He also was an All-Great Plains Conference player in both 1973 and 1974.
