Gerda Weissensteiner, OMRI (born on January 3, 1969) is an Italian bobsleigh and luger who was a competitor from the mid-80s until the year the year 2006. Participating for six Winter Olympics She won her gold in the singles luge for women in 1994’s Winter Olympics at Lillehammer along and Jennifer Isacco she won the bronze medal in Turin in the bobsleigh race for two women at in the Winter Olympics. It was her first time as an Italian athlete to earn Olympic gold medals for two sports.

She also took home seven golds and silvers in the FIL European Luge Championships. She won 2 golds (Mixed teams and women’s Singles Both in 1994) and two silvers (Women’s singles 1990 Mixed team 1998) along with three silvers (Mixed team 1988, 1990and and 1996).

She retired from all competition after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. That year she was appointed as a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. In addition she has a rhododendron named after her: this was part of a collaboration between the Accademia dei Georgofili and the Italian National Olympic Committee to name an azalea after each medal winner at the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2006 Winter Paralympics. Subsequently she returned to youth coaching in luge as well as working as a press officer for the Italian Luge Federation.

Weissensteiner was awarded 11 gold medals during the FIL World Luge Championships. including two golds (Women’s singles 1993 Mixed team 1989) and three silvers (Women’s singles 1989 Mixed team 1990 1995) as well as six bronze medals (Women’s singles 1995 1996 and mixed team 1991, 1993, 1996 1997).

She was first introduced to luge by her uncle around seven years old, beginning by skating on luge tracks made of natural. She took home the World Junior Luge Championship title in 1988.

Weissensteiner was the overall winner of the Luge World Cup title in singles for women twice (1992-3 in 1997, and again from 1992 to). She scored 13 wins 8 second places, and eight third-place finishes at World Cup races. She was also flagbearer during the opening ceremony at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. The Olympic victory was tempered by the tragic death of her younger brother who died in a crash just a few days after in the funeral of her brother. an intruder entered the home of Weissensteiner and took her medal. After the Games she resigned from the luge sport, and became a junior coach for luge.

Weissensteiner returned to sledding as a bobsleigh pilot in 2001. She finished seventh in the 2-woman bobsleigh (with the former biker Antonella Bellutti, gold medalist in cycling) at the 2002 Winter Olympics. After the 2002 Games she teamed up with sprinter Jennifer Isacco, who she competed with until her retirement from the sport. Their best finish in the Bobsleigh World Cup was third twice in the two-woman event. (2002-3, 2003-4 (tied with Germany’s Susi Erdmann)). She finished sixth in the 2-woman bobsleigh event at the 2005 FIBT World Championships in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The following year, Weissensteiner and Isacco finished second in the European Championships, and Weissensteiner joined Erdmann as being one of only two sledders to win a medal in both bobsleigh and luge at the Winter Olympics.
