The parents of her, Mike and Kathleen Heaney moved to Canada at the age of Geraldine was just one year old, but she maintained pride in her Irish birthand often returned to Ulster. The family moved to North York, Ontario, where she grew up . There she began to develop a passion for hockey. She often played goals with the brothers at outdoor skating rinks. A talented player, Heaney also played Gaelic football as well as soccer, fastball, and hockey in-line.
When she was learning about recreation facility management in Seneca College in Toronto, Heaney was selected to play volleyball. However, she immediately switched to hockey when discovering that the school had teams for women. In 1987 she played Seneca to win an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association championship and was selected as a member of both the team’s league and all- star team for the provincial championship.
The first International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) sanctioned Women’s World Championship was played in 1990, in Ottawa. Heaney was selected for Team Canada, but as she was a landed immigrant, she had to rush the process of gaining citizenship before she could play. Canada and the United States were the class of the tournament and met in the final. Heaney scored the gold medal winning goal in dramatic fashion as she deked around two American defencemen before sliding the puck into the net as she tripped over the goaltender and flew through the air in a fashion reminiscent of Bobby Orr’s Stanley Cup winning goal in 1969. The goal, coupled with her skills as an offensive defenceman led to Heaney becoming known as the “Bobby Orr of women’s hockey”.
Heaney also played in two World Ball Hockey Championships. She won a gold medal in 1992 and silver in 1994.
Heaney was part on four teams for the National Championship along with the Aeros. She was the only player to participate at the Esso Women’s National Hockey Championship in every season from 1987 to 2001. Heaney received the distinction of being named as the most efficient defender at that tournament, in 1993 1997, 2001 and 1993 and was named the best player in 1992. After being pregnant for three months with her first baby, Heaney ended her club career in 2004 with the overtime goal that won National Championship. In honor of her 27-year career as a player The Aeros have retired the number of her uniform in the year 2006.

Geraldine Heaney (born October 1 1967) is an Irish-Canadian hockey coach and former defenseman. She played for 18 seasons and more than 1,000 games for Toronto Aeros. Toronto Aeros organization, won six Ontario provincial championships. She was named the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) most valuable defenceman three occasions. The Aeros have retired her number 91 jersey in the year 2006. On the international stage, Heaney was a member of the Canadian national team for the initial seven Women’s World Championships. She was successful in winning gold every time. She has been a twice Olympian who won silver at the opening tournament of the 1998 and gold in 2002. She was appointed director of coaching the University of Waterloo Warriors following her retirement as player.
Heaney was first a part of a hockey team for girls when she was 10 years old She played against girls who were seven years older than herself. The team was formed by with the Toronto Aeros in 1980 at 13 years old. The team began her career with the team, where she played in over thousand games, both at senior level , and then the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL). She was on six teams that won provincial championships and was named the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association’s best defenseman three times in 1987-88, 1991-92 and 1992-93.
The 1990 tournament marked the first of seven consecutive gold medal victories for Heaney, and she was the only player to appear in the first seven World Championships for Canada. She received the Directorate Award as the tournament’s best defenceman at the 1992 and 1994 tournaments, and was named a tournament all-star in 1992.

Heaney remains active in hockey; she turned to coaching and spent six seasons as coach of the University of Waterloo Warriors women’s hockey team, though the program often struggled as it lacked the resources compared to larger university programs. Heaney left Waterloo in 2012 to coach her daughter’s novice team.
