In August 2010, Zamka retired from the Marine Corps after almost 30 years of distinguished service. As of May 2018 he is Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Spaceports.

The year 1997 was the time he graduated with the Masters of Science degree in Engineering Management from the Florida Institute of Technology. He was in 1998 when he was transferred to VMFA(AW)-121 and was assigned in MCAS Iwakuni, Japan.

George David “Zambo” Zamka (born 1962) is an American NASA astronaut and United States Marine Corps pilot with more than 3500 hours of flight time in over 30 different aircraft. Zamka was the pilot of Space Shuttle Discovery in its October 2007 mission to the International Space Station and served as the mission’s commander STS-130 in February 2010.

Zamka earned a Master of Science in Mathematics in the United States Naval Academy in 1984. Zamka was later commissioned to the rank of Second Lieutenant within the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded A-6E Training for Intruders from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington in 1985-1987. His unit was VMA(AW)-242 located at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California. In addition to safety for flight as well as administration duties, he also served as a weapons as well as Tactics instructor. He completed his training as a pilot of the F/A-18D Hornet and was later placed in VMFA(AW)-121. Zamka flew 66 combat missions during Operation Desert Storm. In 1993 the year he became a part of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California as a forward air controller. In December 1994 when he was awarded the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School.
