Daniel Olugbenga Aluko was born on July 20, 1963, in the home of Professor Sam Aluko, a prominent Nigerian economist born in Ekiti State of Nigeria. He was a student at the Federal Government College, Ilorin before being accepted to the University of Benin, graduating in 1982 with the degree of geography and regional Planning. He then went to attend the College of Energy and Petroleum Studies, Oxford, England to take a post-graduate course for International Oil Trading and Pricing. Between the years 1983 to 1999 comprised the Managing Director/CEO of HYGYNIX as well as the Executive Director for Baseline Petroleum and Chemicals and the Executive Chair of Independent Strategists. The position was made Special Assistant of the Minister for Transport and Aviation and General Manager of the Nigeria Shipper’s Council from 1993 until 1995.

After his departure from his position in Senate, Aluko continued in private business and held a major stake of Alstegg and Midlands, a Civil Engineering Firm and serving as the director of Crest Healthcare, Consultant to DFID on issues pertaining to Parliamentary Affairs as well as Director of Public Affairs at Chevron Nigeria. Aluko resigned from the PDP to join an alternative party called the Labour Party, on which platform he did not win for the Ekiti State governorship election in 2007. Then, in December of 2009 Aluko was back with the PDP.

Aluko was in the middle of controversy after he was one of the people indicted by the panel led by Senator Idris Kuta, who investigated financial irregularities committed by Senators. The panel as well as an Ad-hoc committee chaired by Senator Victor Oyofo issued reports that revealed that Aluko overcharged Senators’ rooms with repairs, as well as excessively priced office equipment and computers provided to senators, and recommended that he pay back the amount he overcharged. In September 2002 the Senate approved a motion by Aluklo to have the Senate absolve all Senators who were indicted in both reports.

Daniel Olugbenga Aluko (born 20 July 1963) also commonly referred to by the name Gbenga Aluko, is a Nigerian politician from Nigeria. He was elected as Senator in his Ekiti South constituency of Ekiti State, Nigeria at the beginning of Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. The day he took office was 29 May 1999.

After assuming his seat in the Senate in June 1999, Aluko is appointed the committees of Selection, Senate Services (vice chairman), Aviation, Women Affairs, Finance & Appropriation, Social Development & Sports and Local & Foreign Debts. He was appointed the Deputy Chief Whip in the Senate. Then he was named Vice-Chairman of the Gas Committee and Chairman of the Petroleum Committee. Aluko was against proposals to privatize the Nigerian Mint. He was appointed chairman of an ad-hoc committee to look into the controversy over the closing of Savannah Bank by the Central Bank of Nigeria. On September 2, 2002, Aluko voted in an initiative to create an ad hoc panel to look into allegations of constitutional and budgetary violations committed by president Olusegun Obasanjo who could lead to impeachment. On October 2, 2002 Aluko was appointed to replace Oserheimen Olunbor, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission.
