Gary Malarkey is one of the most popular and richest Australian Rules Footballer who was born on May 23, 1953 in Armadale, Australia. Gary Robert Malarkey (born 23 May 1953) is an ex- Australian rules footballer who played for East Perth (WAFL), Geelong (VFL/AFL), Geelong West (VFA), Western Australia and Victoria.
In Geelong, Gary Malarkey was an immediate and impressive achievement in his usual full back position . He also played for Victoria. Malarkey was widely regarded as the best full back in Australia in the subsequent 10 seasons, and was astonishingly constant with one of the most challenging positions within Victorian football. In 1983, Geelong and the current AFL historical Col Hutchinson said of Malarkey in his book “Cats Tales” that he was “one of the most efficient Geelong full backs , and possibly the most powerful defender ever to play for the team. His incredible concentration, strong marking, precise spoiling techniques as well as his speed, determination, and a superb kick resulted in nightmares for forwards opposing him. Few players can match his regularity.”
Gary Malarkey later returned to WA and is now a distinguished member of the staff at the school that gave him his start in football – Trinity College. His students may well gain inspiration from the knowledge that years of perseverance, hard work and dedication by their master have been rewarded with well deserved induction into the WA Football Hall of Fame. Along with Karrene Mclernon, he runs the Indigenous program at Trinity College.
A list of regular opponents that included Hudson, Quinlan, Templeton, Blight and Roach would daunt most defenders but for the hard working and dedicated Gary Malarkey it was all in a day’s work. An All Australian and a Victorian as well as West Australian representative prior to state of origin football, Malarkey was recognised as the most effective full back of his era.
Gary Malarkey was a regular WA State of Origin representative during his time at Geelong and was selected for the all Australian selection following his 1979 State of Origin carnival. He was named to the VFL Team of the Year in
- He was also runner-up in Geelong’s fairest and most outstanding award in that year. He decided at the time, to go to Perth to complete his playing career, Geelong. in an act of appreciation, offered him life membership, despite his 143 games falling 7 games less than the minimum qualifying score. However, no agreement was made in the near future with East Perth, or any other WAFL club, and Malarkey went back to Geelong. He soon fought his way back into the team, but an operation on his shoulder two years later put an untimely end to his lengthy and distinguished career as a senior. He had played in 283 senior matches, but after that he played his final time with Geelong West. Geelong West club in the Victorian Football Association and he was the last coach at the club in 1988.

Malarkey was born in Armadale and he grew up playing his Australian football during his time at Trinity College and joined East Perth at the age of 18. While he made his debut as a half forward flank at the end of the 1971 season, Malarkey managed to only manage two senior games in the year. He was reintroduced to defence the next year, he swiftly proved his potential with playing in all 23 games , and played at fullback as part of the Royals 1972 Premiership team.
While not tall enough for a important defensive player (185 millimetres) Malarkey was extremely strong and showed a early tendency to check defensive close and a love of the tough duels between man and man. Malarkey had excellent anticipation and excellent speed in the first 20 metres and was also an extremely strong marker and a superb kicker, frequently pushing the centre circle with his kicks from the entire back line. After his first full year (1973) Malarkey captured East Perth’s highest and fairest award and also represented WA with a win against South Australia. Malarkey was accepted by Geelong however East Perth imposed a minimum time of service of 100 league games before clearance could be granted. The player stayed for an additional three years, before eventually transferring over to Cats Cats at the end of 1977.
Gary wore the Cats famous number 5 guernsey previously worn by another legendary Western Australian, Graham “Polly” Farmer, but after Gary’s premature retirement during the 1984 pre-season the number 5 had been allocated to Gary Ablett. After a reshuffle of numbers Malarkey was allocated the number 6 guernsey previously worn by Rod Waddell, which he wore until his retirement in 1986.
