Leighton O’Brien (born March 14 in 1977 in Tacoma, Washington) is a famous American soccer player currently working as Technical Director of the Pacific Northwest Soccer Club.
On 29 March 2005, He signed with the expansion Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. At that time, he still contracted for the Sounders. The Sounders let him go in exchange for Salt Lake in exchange for the team to play in an exhibition match against Seattle. Salt Lake granted O’Brien a loan back to Seattle numerous times throughout the season before finally releasing O’Brien on the 19th of August 2005. O’Brien then signed as a player with the Sounders. His free kick during the USL-1 Final of 2005 kicked off the Seattle Sounders tying goal. The kick was twice redirected after which Maykel Galindo scored Seattle’s goal in a 1-1 draw Richmond Kickers. Then, O’Brien scored one 4 penalty kicks scored by Seattle in their win over in the 2004 Championship with penalty kicks. Leighton returned to Seattle in 2006 for the remainder of the year as well, in the year 2007, when he assisted the Sounders achieve the double. The Sounders stayed with him until the end of the season, when the team disbanded at the year’s end because of Seattle Sounders FC joining Major League Soccer.
Having been unable to secure a professional contract, O’Brien signed with Tacoma Tide of the USL Premier Development League for the 2009 season.
O’Brien is noted most significantly for his tenure with the Seattle Sounders of the USL First Division, where the Tacoma native helped the Sounders claim the double, and as well as several other titles. Most of his personal achievements derived from his time with Seattle. In February, 2010 he was ranked 11th in the USL First Division Top 25 of the Decade, which announced a list of the best and most influential players of the previous decade.
The 30th of April, 2001 Leighton joined The Seattle Sounders, where he was a success in his season, scoring seven assists and scoring 11 goals, All-League honors. After the conclusion of USL season and the signing of the Sacramento Knights of the World Indoor Soccer League for the remaining portion of the season. In 2002 the Sounders were loaned for the Clash. He enjoyed another great season with the Sounders which saw 11 assists and 13 goals assisted in helping the Sounders take home the league championship. The team also awarded his All-League recognition, an Assist Leader award, and awarded by the USL A-League MVP. He was then signed on an on loan deal from the Sounders to The Milwaukee Wave of Major Indoor Soccer League for the 2002-2003 season. He played in two indoor winter seasons: 2002-2003 and 2003-04 in the Wave. They Sounders signed O’Brien to a contract for three years prior to the 2003 season however, he only played three games for Seattle prior to being transferred on loan in Bodens BK in the Swedish Second Division. He played in 23 games with six goals, while providing nine assists. In 2004 he returned to Boden in the fourth quarter of the year, however he he was unable to play for most of the season to an injury to his groin. In November of 2005 the Wave sold O’Brien’s rights to the California Cougars in exchange for Pat White, but did not participate in the Cougers.

He was born within The Pacific Northwest, graduating from Federal Way High School in 1994. He played in the college soccer league in San Diego’s University of San Diego, having to redshirt his freshman season when an injury in the early season sidelined him.
O’Brien was picked in his team the New England Revolution in the third round of 1999’s MLS College Draft. He did not play for the Revs prior to being released March 31st 1999. On April 5 1999 The San Jose Clash claimed O’Brien during the waiver draft. The majority of the season on loan to MLS Pro-40 and only four games in the Clash first team before being released at the conclusion of the year. He was a part of the 2000 season when he joined the San Diego Flash of the USL A-League. In the past in the past, he also played for the Sacramento Knights of the World Indoor Soccer League.
On August 7, 2009 O’Brien signed a contract for the remainder of the season with the Montreal Impact, joining his brother Ciaran O’Brien who was on loan with the same team. On September 29, O’Brien was released by Impact.
