He was previously the head of the 101st Airborne Division and commander of the American ground forces in Iraq as part of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve. Volesky was retired in February of 2020 after being replaced by Lt. General Randy George as commander of I Corps.
Volesky succeeded the Lieutenant General Stephen Lanza as commander of I Corps on 3 April 2017. He was sacked in February 2020, following the Lieutenant General Randy George succeeded him as I Corps commander.
Volesky was an U.S. Army’s chief of public affairs at Washington, D.C., prior to his appointment as the head of the 101st Airborne Division in June 2014. He was sent by the 101st Airborne Division to Liberia to aid with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in the fight against the ebola epidemic by constructing treatment facilities as well as training aid personnel. Later, he served as the head for the American troops on the ground in Iraq as part of the Combined Joint Task Force which was part of Operation Inherent Resolve.

A native of Spokane, Washington, Volesky graduated from Ferris High School in 1979. The following year, Volesky received an undergraduate master’s degree in military sciences at Eastern Washington University.
