Gary Thompson Gillespie (born 5 July 1960) is a Scottish former professional football player which played at Coventry City and later Liverpool throughout their dominant time in the 1980s.

Gillespie had a long time to get settled in, mostly due to the fact that the defenders Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen were ahead of him. But eventually, he was able to join the squad and made his debut on February 7th 1984, during the draw for the 2-3 League Cup draw with Walsall at Anfield. He played 14 times during the 1985-86 campaign, scoring three league goals as the Reds secured the double of the league title as well as winning the FA Cup, beating their closest rivals Everton in the second spot as well as beating their opponents 3-1 during the final of the cup at Wembley. Gillespie was in enough games enough to earn the league title medal however he was not included in the team to play in the FA Cup final at a moment where only one substitute was allowed.

Gillespie won 13 caps for Scotland. Andy Roxburgh gave him his debut on 14 October 1987 in the 2–0 UEFA European Championship qualifier victory over Belgium at Hampden Park. He was selected for the squad that went to the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, but his only appearance came on 20 June against Brazil at the Stadio delle Alpi Turin, a game the Scots lost 1–0. They failed to progress past the group stages.

Gillespie firmly established himself in the first team the following year, when he missed just three league games all season. By 1988, when he partnered Hansen in all but five of Liverpool’s games in the league, the Anfield club were a cut above every other side, losing just twice and coasting to the title. Gillespie weighed in with his share of goals too, including one in a famous 5–0 hammering of Nottingham Forest, which critics, including Tom Finney, described as the finest domestic performance by any English club.

Liverpool signed the player on July 8th, 1983 for a fee of PS325,000. The signing was the first made by the manager who was replaced Joe Fagan.
