Gary Patrick Breen (born 12 December 1973) was a former player who played hundreds of appearances for the Football League and Premier League. He was a player for a variety of clubs in his 20-year span, and made more than 100 appearances at Coventry City and Sunderland. He earned an impressive 63 games for Ireland. Republic of Ireland, and took part at 2002’s FIFA World Cup, scoring in Ireland’s victory of 3-0 against Saudi Arabia.
After the 2002 World Cup, Breen was granted a free transfer to West Ham United by manager Glenn Roeder, but left the club following their demotion from the top league and just 18 games in all tournaments. Breen was offered an unpaid transfer by his former Ireland boss Mick McCarthy for Sunderland.
In December 2008, he joined Barnet as a player/coach. In July 2009 Breen signed a new contract to become player/assistant manager at the club.
On the Goals on Sunday programme on 6 September 2009, Breen revealed that he had agreed to move to Inter Milan after the 2002 World Cup, but failed a medical. Breen had also been linked with a move to Barcelona. Breen left Barnet in June 2010.
Breen’s performances at Coventry made him a permanent fixture on the national team. Breen was a participant at the 2002 FIFA World Cup as Ireland reached an appearance in the 2nd round of the tournament under Mick McCarthy. Breen scored in Ireland’s 3-0 group win over Saudi Arabia.

Breen’s performance in Birmingham led to him being selected for his first team, the Republic of Ireland national football team. On the 29th of May, 1996 Breen made his debut as the substitute was Alan Kernaghan in the 88th minute of the 1-0 loss in a friendly match to Portugal on Lansdowne Road. A few days later, Breen made his first debut in the 2-2 draw against Croatia and played for 74 minutes before getting substituted with Tony Cascarino. Breen scored his first goal for Croatia just two days later. He scored the opener during the 3-1 loss against Netherlands. Netherlands in De Kuip in Rotterdam.
He played just one full season with Peterborough United, but did good enough to be noticed to First Division Birmingham City, which paid PS250,000 for him at the beginning of February. Within 12 months of having arrived at Birmingham the club, his move was announced again, this time to Premier League Coventry City in a PS2.5 million deal. He played five full years on the pitch at Highfield Road, four in the top division.
He was made Wolves’ club captain for the 2007–08 season, but ended up missing several months through injury. He was involved in an after-match confrontation with his manager in March 2008.
