On July 7, 2007, Bollan has been appointed the Head of Development for Youngsters at Clyde however Bollan has been in the dugout as a coach since January 2008. He was as a joint caretaker of the team with Dougie Bell, for two games following his resignation Colin Hendry. Then, in April of 2009 in the wake of reports of financial difficulties with Clyde, Bollan left the club.
In October 2013, Bollan was appointed manager of Scottish League One club Airdrieonians. The club were bottom of League One when he took over, but after a while getting settled and strengthening the squad, a strong finish to the season saw them avoid relegation. A fine run of form, in which they lost just one game (away to Rangers) in their last 16 fixtures saw them finish in sixth place, having secured their League One status with two games to spare. In May 2014 Bollan’s contract was extended until May 2016.
Bollan left his position as manager of Airdrieonians in December 2015 to take over from Dick Campbell at fellow League One side Forfar Athletic. However, he was unable to avoid relegation to Scottish League Two. He guided them back to the third tier via the play-offs in the following season, in which the club led for most of the season before missing out on the final day to Arbroath. Bollan was sacked by Forfar in September 2017, after a run of defeats culminated in a 5–0 defeat at Arbroath.
The 2004-05 season was spent as a coach for players at Clyde. He made debut on the first game of the campaign during Clyde’s derby victory against the rivals Partick Thistle. He is most famous for his performance on the pitch at Broadwood Stadium, when he scored a free-kick of 40 yards to take Falkirk from the Scottish Cup. He was awarded Clyde player of the game during their match against Celtic during the last phases of the competition. Bollan was briefly the manager in caretaker mode until the close in the league. Bollan was signed by Brechin in July of 2005, but was released for transfer shortly afterward. On November 6, 2006 Gary Bollan signed for Carnoustie Panmure.

Bollan was a product of the youth program and was a part of the first team of Dundee United as a teenager in the mid 1990s. The player attracted interest from Rangers who signed him in January of 1995. Bollan played for three seasons at Ibrox but only made one appearance due to injuries. Bollan was moved from Ibrox to St Johnstone in 1998 and was there for three years.
The move from Heart of Midlothian stalled in March 2001 following failing to pass a medical. Bollan was transferred into First Division champions Livingston four months afterward. His participation for Livingston at the UEFA Cup meant that he was a part of several Scottish club throughout European competition. Bollan returned to Dundee United in February 2003 for a year following a brief period in Motherwell during 2004. Then, in August of 2004 Bollan was the start of his two stints with Clyde in the role of coach and player.
On 14 August 2009, Bollan became the new manager of his former club, Livingston. In October 2009, Bollan won SFL manager of the month following three victories and a draw in the league and a 3–1 victory over Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup 2nd Round. He followed this up by winning it again the following month, winning three out of three in the league. Bollan then won Third Division Manager of the Year, after leading his team to promotion by a margin of 15 points. Livingston won promotion from the Second Division, but Bollan was sacked by Livingston in February 2012. The club cited his alleged failure to develop young players as their reason for his dismissal.
