Garry Robert Charles Howatt (born on 26th September 1952) is a Canadian former ice hockey player. Howatt was well-known for his strength and, because of his size was nicknamed “Toy Tiger.”
Howatt was a huge hit with the Islanders and remained on the team from the start of their season through their early periods of gradual improvement all the way to winning their initial two Stanley Cups, in 1980 and 1981. Howatt was referred to along with his teammate Bobby Nystrom as a member of the “Dynamic Duo”, was popular with fans due to his energetic, savage style of playing. This is why Islander fans formed an Howatt-Nystrom booster club, dubbed”the “Dynamic Duo Fan Club” which was active throughout the 1970s.
On January 15, 1983 Howatt, as a member of the Devils, and Mickey Volcan, as a member of the Whalers, became the only active players to officiate an NHL game, when a snowstorm prevented a referee, Ron Fournier, and a linesman, Ron Asselstine, from reaching the Hartford Civic Center for a game between the two teams. He retired after the 1983–84 NHL season.
Howatt is afflicted with epilepsy and was acknowledged as a member of his fellow members of the epilepsy group for his extreme grittiness and was awarded his national Epileptic Foundation’s Man of the Year Award in 1974. Then, he moved to New Jersey, where he ran his own company, Mt. Freedom Golf, which he was able to sell in the year the year 2010. Howatt is now living at home in Arizona together with wife, and is still playing the game together with NHL alumni. He also is active in rodeos all over Arizona taking part in team roping contests.

He was born at Grand Centre, Alberta, Howatt played for one season playing in the WCHL with the Flin Flon Bombers in 1971-72. He scored 79 points over 60 games. In 1972, he was selected in the NHL by the New York Islanders at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. In the following year, he was a player for the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League, scoring 49 points over the course of 65 games.
Howatt began his National Hockey League career with the New York Islanders in 1972.
When he left the Islanders in 1981, Howatt held the Islanders’ career penalty- minutes record (1,466) and career playoffs penalty-minutes record (279). With the Hartford Whalers, Howatt scored a career-high 50 points and was offered a long-term contract and the team’s captaincy. However, in his words, “bad advice from some former teammates” led him to request a trade to the New Jersey Devils, and was traded with Rick Meagher for Merlin Malinowski and the rights to Scott Fusco. After squabbling with Devils’ management, he played only sporadically before ending his career with the Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he helped them win a Calder Cup as their captain.
