After his graduation, Ratanpuri joined the Urdu newspaper Daily Aftaab as Assistant Editor and continued to work for the newspaper until 1979. At the age of 39, at an early age, he was appointed editor of the Nawa-e-Subh that was published by the political party in power Jammu & Kashmir National Conference. Being a part of the Nawa-e-Subh was instrumental in helping Ratanpuri to establish a relationship with the then Chief Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. He was a part of All India Radio at Srinagar in 1981 following being appointed as a candidate by the Union Public Service Commission as an Officer of the Program, but continued working for Nawa-e-Subh until the time of the death of sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. In the year 2000, he was among the most well-known interviewers from the State of J&K.
Although a member of the popular the political group Ratanpuri during the month of March, 2013, Ratanpuri met the Hurriyat Leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani at his New Delhi residence, where Geelani was held in detention for a period of time. According to Ratanpuri, he played key in the release of the Hurriyat’s veteran leader from house arrest following a meeting with the two Union Ministers. met with the Union Home Minister S. K. Shinde and the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. He demanded the release of Geelani. Geelani was released within the period of 24 hours following Ratanpuri’s meeting with the Union Ministers.
Ratanpuri was extremely active in the Parliament in relation to his position on the Kashmir issue. In the joint meeting of Parliament the early months of 2013, Ratanpuri stood up to interrupt the speech by the president of India with black placards with both his hands. He demanded the the return of the remains of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru.

Ratanpuri campaigned against Omar Abdullah in the Lok Sabha in 2004. In 2008, Omar Abdullah asked him to participate in elections for his party, the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference He agreed to this request, which he accepted. In the end, he was forced to retire prematurely to be able to run in his first Assembly Elections. When he made his debut as a politician, the outcome of the election was not his favor and he was defeated by a significant amount in the direction of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party candidate Mohd. Khalil Bandh. Despite being unsuccessful in the elections for the assembly, because of his size his former JKNC party JKNC during July of 2009 proposed him to be a member of the Rajya Sabha, to which the election took place on August 9, 2009. As a member of the Parliament (India) his duties included being the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour, Parliamentary Forum on Children and the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for HRD Ministry. Prior to his resignation from the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference He was Vice-President for the political party of South Kashmir.
Ratanpuri was the subject of headlines within his home State of J&K in the aftermath of 2010’s Kashmir tensions . He was vocally against policy of the government and also criticized Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of the State. This resulted in the emergence of divisions among Ratanpuri as well as Omar Abdullah.
Ratanpuri again lost the state legislative assembly elections in 2014 to Mohd Khalil Bandh. Though again unsuccessful the loss was less disappointing than the previous one as this time he had lost by only a margin of 1032 votes (3.45% of the valid votes).
