Smith is a born and raised in Leonardtown, Maryland , Smith is the oldest son of head of basketball Tubby Smith. G.G. was a student at Cascia Hall Preparatory School while his father was a coach in Tulsa’s University of Tulsa. After graduation of Cascia Hall in 1995 Smith was enrolled at Georgia’s University of Georgia and played basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs under Tubby Smith who was appointed as the coach at Georgia in the following year. A guard at point, Smith joined the starting line-up as a sophomore. He scored 9.5 points as well as 2.4 rebound. He played his senior and junior years in the direction of Ron Jirsa. As an athlete in the senior class, Smith averaged 8.5 points and 2.3 rebound. Smith completed his degree from Georgia in December of 1999 with the degree of fitness and health.

Smith started his career in coaching as an assistant teacher and coach at Lexington Catholic High School situated in Lexington, Kentucky. In the autumn of 2000, Smith was accepted at the University of Kentucky for graduate school. He joined Tubby Smith’s team as an assistant professor. After completing his master’s on sports administration in the year 2002 Smith was appointed an assistant at Tennessee Tech. From 2004 through 2006. Smith served as an assistant coach at Armstrong Atlantic State, then at Johns Hopkins during the 2006-07 football season.
