Schodt’s father served employed in his father’s US foreign service and Schodt was raised within Norway, Australia, and Japan. The family first moved into Japan in 1965, at the time that Schodt turned fifteen. They left in 1967 however, Schodt was able to complete his studies at the American School in Japan in Tokyo in the year 1968. After attending in the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in the year 1970, Schodt returned to Japan and began studying Japanese extensively through International Christian University (ICU) for about a year and a half. He completed his studies at UCSB in 1972 and after a brief period of bohemian living in a variety of tasks and trips as tour guides at the city of Los Angeles for Japanese tourists as well as escorting visitors on trips to Canada as well as Mexico. After attempting to translate for a group at Sunkist He realized that it was possible to become an interpreter however, he needed to further train. He graduated in 1975 and won an award from Japan’s Ministry of Education, to return to ICU and further study interpretation and translation. After completing studying in ICU and in the year 1977, started working in the department of translation at Simul International, in Tokyo. In mid-1978, he re-emerged in America. United States, and since then , he has been as a freelance translator in San Francisco as a freelance translator, writer and interpreter.
When he was working in Tokyo around 1977, Mr. Kobayashi joined some of his university buddies in making contact with Tezuka Productions. They asked an authorisation to translate Phoenix manga into English.
