Samson, a singer-songwriter, selected the novel for Canada Reads 2007. Lullabies won this competition. The Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction was also awarded to the book. It was shortlisted for eight other major awards including the Orange Prize for Fiction, the Governor General’s Award, and was longlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award.
In 2014, she published her second novel, The Girl Who Was Saturday Night. It was nominated for the Scotiabank Giller Prize 2014. It was also nominated for both the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction (Baileys) and Encore Award.
O’Neill’s 2017 CLC Kreisel Lecture was published in 2018 by The University of Alberta Press as Wisdom in Nonsense – Invaluable Lessons From My Father.
Her third novel The Lonely Hearts Hotel, was published in 2017 and won the Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction.
O’Neill provided English narration and adaptation of her 2008 short story, “The End of Pinky”. It was included on the Toronto International Film Festival’s 2013 top ten short films list.
