Marques was able to decide to stop being professional in 2009, after realizing that he could not make any progress more as a player in the near future and that he had become a burden financially on his parents. But his last professional game would be later in the year, at the Futures doubles event in Russia and he played with his coach Alexander Lobkov. He set a record for doubles world number. 773 in 2005, and singles world No. 964 in 2006.

When Marques ended his player career, he sought other options to remain physically active. After his retirement, Marques embarked on a coaching career at the BTT Tennis Academy despite not having any previous coaching experience. His first experience as a professional was with Russian Alexander Lobkov in 2009.
