Fred began his career with Brazilian club Internacional where he took home the Campeonato Gaucho twice. In June of 2013, he signed to Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk. There, he was awarded 10 trophies, which included three Ukrainian Premier League titles. In the year 2018 Fred was signed by Manchester United.

During the Ukrainian crisis, Fred was among the six Shakhtar players who refused to return to Donetsk in July 2014 following a pre-season friendly against Olympique Lyonnais in France. A few days later, he returned to Ukraine after the club relocated training sessions to Kiev.

Fred represented Brazil at under-20 level, before making his senior international debut in November 2014. He was part of Brazil’s squad for the 2015 Copa América in Chile, starting in their first two Group C matches as they reached the quarter-finals. He was named in Brazil’s final 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

On June 26, 2013 Fred signed with Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee of EUR15 million. Fred scored two goals in his debut at the Ukrainian Super Cup, helping Shakhtar to win 3-1 against Chornomorets Odesa.

The birthplace of Fred was Belo Horizonte, Fred spent the first six years of his life at the local soccer club Atletico Mineiro, before joining Porto Alegre in 2009. A year later the club joined Internacional. The club initially played him at different levels for youth, and was able to help them win six titles in 2010 which included winning the Copa Santiago and Copa FGF. He made his debut for the club aged 18 on the 26th of January 2012, playing against Ceramica at the Campeonato Gaucho. His first professional goal came on the 18th of July 2012, during the Serie A game against his former club Atletico Mineiro. In total, he scored eight goals in his 55 games for Internacional and was awarded the Campeonato Gaucho twice.
