Frank Valeriote (born August 15 1954) is a Canadian politician from Canada. He was elected the Liberal MP in 2008 with a narrow margin against Conservative Candidate Gloria Kovach and subsequently served as a MP until the end of October. Valeriote decided not to contest the 2015 federal election. When he spoke to Guelph Mercury newspaper in November 2014, he said he was not running Guelph Mercury newspaper in November 2014, he mentioned his need to have more quality time with young children. “I feel it is important in a meaningful way to be there for their millionth step as they enter their teenage years as it was to see their first step.” In a follow-up interview he announced his intention to return to the legal profession, “I’m physically, emotionally, and psychologically preparing for the move from member of parliament to an active lawyer at Smith Valeriote.” On the 26th of October, SmithValeriote Law Firm LLP welcomed Frank Valeriote back to the firm where he was an associate principal until when he became a member of parliament.

Based on an incident from the campaign for the 2011 elections Valeriote’s Liberal riding association was sanctioned by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for violating the Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules. According to The National Post, this fine was resulted from a robocall that was sent on April 30, 2011, which was anonymously criticizing his Conservative opponent’s views regarding abortion. The call did not identify its source and did not provide a number for a callback in the National Post article. As part of a settlement with Valeriote the CRTC issued a fine of $4,900. In the words of CBC News, “Valeriote admitted the robocalls originated with his team but said it was an attempt to respond to an issue raised during the campaign and was not meant to suppress votes”.

On November 13, 2014, Valeriote announced that he would not be seeking re- election in 2015. At the time of that announcement, Valeriote was the Liberal critic for veterans affairs, and the vice chair of the standing committee on veterans affairs, according to CBC News. He subsequently endorsed the new Liberal candidate, Lloyd Longfield who went on to win the riding by an overwhelming majority in the federal election held on Oct. 19, 2015.

Valeriote was first chosen for the Liberal candidate for this year’s Guelph by-election following the departure of Brenda Chamberlain from the House of Commons. However, the issue of writs for the federal election delayed that Guelph by-election.
