Treur was raised in the strict Reformed Christian farming family in her Zeelandic birthplace of Meliskerke. After high school, she attended the Calvijn College, she went to pursue a degree in the psychology field within Leiden University. Then she moved on to Dutch literary and language sciences. In Leiden she joined the part of the Reformed student organization Panoplia. According to an interview in the newspaper during her studies, she was struck by the similarity in stories from Ancient Near Eastern cultures and the ones found to the Bible and was convinced that the stories were created to help humans. In addition, she claims that she has never believed in that there was God and thus had to abandon her faith. She then informed the Panoplia’s board Panoplia about this on September 11, 2001.
in 2006 Treur received an award for her essay competition, themed ‘Macht und onmacht’ (‘Power and powerlessness’) commissioned by Contrast Magazine and nrc.next in conjunction with her work Maak Iets of Je Leven! Maar wat? (“Make something from your own life! how? “).
In 2014, she participated in the International Writing Program’s Fall Residency at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA.
