Armstrong is a native of Preston, Lancashire. As a child , she spent for 10 years in Nigeria and her father served serving in the colonial service. She was crowned the Lady MacGregor of MacGregor after she got married to the clan chief Sir Malcolm Charles MacGregor 7th Baronet (born 1959) in 2005. She has one daughternamed Natasha who was born from the first wedding she had with Rodney Potts.

After completing a degree in German Literature in University College, London, she started her career with local radio before joining with the BBC news department in Manchester at the age of 1983. After that, she moved to Border Television as a news reporter, and later became a regular newsreader and host for the evening regional news program Lookaround. On March 27, 1987, she moved into ITN as a reporter/newscaster for News at Ten, News at 5:45 (later News at 5:40) and various bulletins. For reporting she reported on the Lockerbie air tragedy and also produced an episode on AIDS orphans from Africa. As of 1993, she had been a member of the team that launched the ITV breakfast channel GMTV and then was dismissed after a couple of months.
