Barrientos was a highly-ranked player on the junior circuit, most notable for his achievement to in the semifinals for the singles boys tournament at the 1985 Wimbledon Championships.
He attended Colegio San Agustin in Makati and played American tennis in collegiate competition in Louisiana State University (LSU) with a scholarship. He was part of the team that made it to in the semifinals at the 1988 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships. When he played in the semifinal against Stanford He took the title in the singles with Patrick McEnroe. However, LSU was unable to win the final series by 2-5.
A right-handed player, Barrientos won several medals for the Philippines at the Southeast Asian Games, three of them gold medals, including in the men’s singles when Manila hosted the event in 1991.
