The striker scored six goals during his year 2004 AFC Asian Cup qualification, two goals in a 7-0 win against Nepal as well as a hat-trick the 6-0 victory over Nepal and a third in a 3-1 win against South Korea hence helping his team be able to participate in an appearance at the AFC Asian Cup. At the event, Oman got four points during a 2-0 win against Thailand and a draw of 2-2 against Iran and was not able to make it to the quarterfinals.

Ismail Matar, the Emirati legend, scored the lone goal of the match as United Arab Emirates won their first ever Arabian Gulf Cup.
He first displayed his talents in his 16th Arabian Gulf Cup in 2003-04 and scored two goals. One in the 1-1 draw against Yemen and the other in a 2-0 victory over Qatar. The tournament ended with Oman was fourth position, which was the highest position ever during the Arabian Gulf Cup competition, getting to the final four rounds in the very first time scoring eight points with two draws and two wins.

In the 21st Arabian Gulf Cup in 2013, he made two appearances as the captain of the team but failed to score a single goal. Oman again could score only one goal and this time it was from the spot by youngster Hussain Al-Hadhri against Qatar which Oman eventually lost 2-1. Oman failed to qualify for the semi- finals.
