Fabrice Vetea Santoro (born 9 December 1972) is an French former tennis pro from Tahiti. Highly successful in singles as well as doubles, he played an extremely long and successful professional career and many of his achievements occurring towards the final stages of his career and he’s a favorite with spectators and players alike for his winning attitude and shot-making skills and is one of the few types of player who is able to play two hands on both forehand and backhand side.
Additionally, Santoro won what was at the time the longest singles match of the history of open tennis: at the 2004 French Open Santoro defeated another Frenchman Arnaud Clement over a period of six hours first-round game lasting 33 minutes (6-4, 6-3 6-7(5) 6-6 16-14). The record was held till John Isner defeated Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon in 2010, however it continues to be an official French Open record.
When Santoro successfully defended his 2007 title by winning the 2008 Newport tournament at the age of 35, he became the oldest tennis player to win back- to-back championships at an ATP singles event.
With his participation in the 2008 Australian Open, he broke Andre Agassi’s record in Grand Slam appearances over his career with a total of 62. Santoro retired at the end of the 2009 season at his hometown tournament at the 2009 BNP Paribas Masters in Paris (Bercy), losing his final singles match against James Blake and final doubles match against Johan Brunström and Jean-Julien Rojer while partnering compatriot Sébastien Grosjean.
Santoro has won the 2003 and 2004 Australian Open doubles titles, playing with Michael Llodra, a French countryman, and finished runner-up during the 2002 Australian Open, 2004 French Open and the 2006 Wimbledon Championships. He also took in 2005 the French Open mixed doubles title together with Daniela Hantuchova. Santoro was paired along with Michael Llodra again to win the 2005 Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai which was a tournament that featured the best eight doubles teams from the world.
