Brad Parks (born July 13 1974) is an American writer of thrillers and mystery novels. He was the winner of two awards: the 2013 and the 2010 Shamus Award, the 2010 Nero Award and the 2013 and 2014 Lefty Award. He is the only writer who has received all three awards. He has written both stand-alone suspense novels for the domestic market and the series featuring the investigative reporter Carter Ross, who covers the criminal scene for a fictional newspaper The Newark Eagle-Examiner, based in Newark, New Jersey. His books are known for their humor mixed with the grim urban realism. Library Journal has called him “a gifted storyteller (with shades of Mark Twain or maybe Dave Barry).”
Parks her third book, The Girl Next Door is a look at the battles of the publishing industry and the ways in which a dispute over union membership leads to the demise of the character of a woman described as similar to that girl who lives next to her. The novel was awarded the Lefty Award for best humorous mystery. By winning the award, Parks made history as the very first writer to win three awards: the Lefty, Nero and Shamus Awards. The Girl Next Door also received a glowing review from Booklist and Booklist called it “… an “absolute masterpiece.” Library Journal called the Carter Ross series “a refreshing tonic for the mystery soul.”. Shelf Awareness gave it a highly rated review, describing it as “perfect for the reader who loves an LOL moment but wants a mystery that’s more than empty calories.” Kirkus Reviews named it one of the top 100 books of fiction for 2012, which makes it among one or two books to be awarded that distinction.
Parks released his first standalone novel, and his first novel published by Dutton Books in 2017. Entitled Say Nothing, it tells the story of a judge whose children are kidnapped by people who are looking to control the outcome of a case the judge is hearing. It received endorsements from Lee Child, Sue Grafton, Jeffery Deaver, Joseph Finder, Chris Pavone, and William Landay, in addition to starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, and Library Journal. The Washington Post called it, “deeply moving. How moving? Its ending brought me to tears, and, where books are concerned, such moments are rare.” The Richmond Times-Dispatch called it “the work of an author who continues to raise his sights and refine his immense talent.”
Parks published Closer Than You Know in March 2018. It received starred reviews from Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews, the latter of which called it “another irresistible descent into hell.”
Parks began writing his first novel at the age of 26 in the cafe of the Barnes & Noble as a method of occupying himself when his wife was studying for her master’s degree. The source of his first novel that was published, Faces of the Gone was a quadruple murder in Newark which he reported on as journalist. The novel was sold to the St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books 2008 and was released on the 8th of December on the 8th of December. Prior to its publication, Harlan Coben called it an “terrific debut.” Library Journal gave it a rave review, calling the novel “the most hilariously funny and deadly serious mystery debut since Janet Evanovich’s One for the Money.” The novel was awarded the 2010 Shamus Award for best first novel, as well as the Nero Award for best American mystery. Faces of the Gone is the only book that has twice won both awards.

Parks is a native of New Jersey but grew up in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where the school he attended was Ridgefield High School. He began working as a journalist for the local paper, The Ridgefield Press, at the age of 14, covering sports at high school. He was a student at Dartmouth College, founding his own newspaper, The Sports Weekly (now no longer in existence) as well as singing with the Dodecaphonics which was a co-ed cappella group. While a student, the musician was employed as a stringer for The New York Times and as an intern at The Boston Globe. After finishing Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth in 1996, he worked as an intern for The Washington Post, and was later hired as a full-time reporter by the newspaper, that assigned him to the bureau located in Manassas, Virginia. He was hired in 1998. relocated into The Star-Ledger and began working as a sports feature writer as well as reporter for news features. It received a starred review from Booklist, which called it “a tautly written page-turner with charm and humor.” Library Journal opined “Parks’s award-winning series is essential reading.” RT Book Reviews said the book “will please even the most discerning reader.” The Associated Press called it “a great lighthearted read.” It won the 2014 Shamus Award in the category of Best Hardcover Novel. In doing so, Parks became the first former Best First Shamus Award winner to subsequently win Best Hardcover Novel.
