Pharaonic Journeys (‘sfr lfryn) was released in 1999. It weaves together the stories of nine characters caught in a perpetual journey both inside and outside Egypt the novel recounts their efforts to confront an imagined apocalypse Egypt which is plagued by epidemics, environmental catastrophes social decline, and extreme poverty – all caused by the brutality of a failing state. Pharaonic Journeys, although it appears to be an ode to the demise of hope, isn’t an indictment of nihilism, but an illustration of the tragic situation of a nation which struggles to keep some sense of humanity and even hope, in the midst of a raging destruction. Similar to the previous edition, Pharaonic Journeys was repeatedly reprinted since its publication in 2009.
He published his third novel, Intensive Care Unit (غرفة العناية المركزة) in 2008, which gained him considerable praise from the public and critics alike. The novel is polyphonic, composed of four narratives by its main characters: a woman and three men. Coming from different social and religious backgrounds, the four find themselves trapped under the rubble of the Egyptian Consulate in Khartoum, which has been blown up by jihadis. Waiting for a rescue that doesn’t seem to come, each of them gives free rein to a trail of introspection and reflection on their personal lives and pivotal decisions taken, as well as on the socio-political situation that led them to where they are. Intensive Care Unit immediately became a best-seller, was nominated for the Arabic Booker Prize and has been reprinted several times.
Fishere’s fifth novel, Embrace on Brooklyn Bridge (عناق عند جسر بروكلين), was published in 2011 and shortlisted for Arabic Booker Prize (2012). It is described by critics as a novel about identity complexity that goes beyond the classic East/West dichotomy. The novel, which has been reprinted eleven times to date, narrates the stories of eight Egyptians living on the eastern coast of the United States and critically examines their struggles, claims, and illusions.
The first novel by Fishere The Killing of Fakhredine (mqtl fkhrldyn) was released without much public notice in 1995. It remained unnoticed until 2009 . It was then that it, along with the other works of Fishere’s attracted the attention of the general public as well as critics. The novel tells the story of the pseudo-mythical story of Fakhredine who mysteriously disappeared in the Cairo neighborhood at the beginning of the 90s. In the aftermath of an investigation that is unable to prove that he was murdered through security agencies, the principal investigator decides to investigate the issue in private. Combining the past with the actuality with mythical and prophetic accounts and a saga of rumors, we are taken into a tangled web of contradictory and disturbing accounts of the lifeand deaths of Fakhredine. This novel was printed many times since 2009.
