Evelyn Matthei Biography

Evelyn Matthei is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on November 11, 1953 in Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile. Evelyn Rose Matthei Fornet (born 11 November 1953) is a Chilean politician who was Secretary of Labor and Social Security under Chilean President Sebastian Pinera until July 2013. The Independent Democrats Union Party’s candidate for president of Chile in the elections of 2013. She is currently Mayor of Providencia Her term is 2016-2020.

In 1986, she quit her post as a government official to become Vice President for Tourism, Commerce and Securities at Bancard S.A. a position she would hold until she was elected to the position of Deputy four years later. In 1988, she was invited to join the advisory team of the Social and Economic Commission, and then returned as a professor at Catholic University, this time as an instructor in Introductory Economics. In November of 2015, she announced she was back in politics and that she was running for the position of major in Providencia in the municipal elections of 2016.

In 1990, she was National Renewal’s candidate for Deputy for the 23rd Electoral district, representing the upscale communes of Las Condes, Vitacura, and Lo Barnechea, winning by a broad margin. Following her increasing popularity, Matthei was tapped as a potential presidential candidate for the center-right Democracy and Progress Coalition. However, following a highly publicized wire-tapping scandal in 1993 known as Piñeragate, involving her and rival presidential hopeful Sebastián Piñera, she was forced to desist from her presidential bid. Disgusted with the way National Renewal leaders dealt with the scandal, she resigned from the party and continued her political career as an independent until 1999.

In 1994, she opted to run for Deputy of the 15th Electoral District of San Antonio, winning the seat as an independent with support from the Independent Democrat Union (UDI) party. Upon completion of her term, Matthei was elected senator in 1997, representing the Coquimbo Region, being re-elected in 2005. In 1999, she joined the Independent Democrat Union. As Senator, she became the first woman to preside over the Senate Budget and Oversight Committee. Matthei resigned from her seat in January 2011 when she was appointed Minister of Labor and Social Security by President Sebastián Piñera.

Matthei was a participant in Chilean political life in late 1980s after the military’s government relaxed the restrictions on political activities. She was a member of the National Renewal party’s youth group known as Patrulla Juvenil (“Youth Patrol”) together with the future president of Chile Sebastian Pinera, and the future minister and senator Andres Allamand. She was part on the group’s Political Commission and later elected its National Vice- President. National Renewal (RN) is an extreme center-right liberal- conservative political party.

In 1974, Matthei began studying in the Economics Institute of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, which earned her an licentiate degree in Economics within four years. She earned a degree in Economics and was able to pass the final oral examination and even received an award for the most outstanding student during her time, however she says she stole her dissertation, and she was not able to complete her degree.

In 1979, Matthei was a graduate, and later became the head in 1979 of International Economics at the Economics Institute of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. After a year of work as a researcher for an independent consultancy firm, Forestal S.A. she was employed as an analyst within the Superintendencia de AFP, the public body that is responsible for the administration of Chile’s the privatized system of pensions. In less than a year, she was elevated to the position of head of department.

Matthei began her career as a lecturer at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, before working in management in the private sector. Following Chile’s return to democracy in 1989, she successfully ran for Deputy of the 23rd Electoral District the year after. Matthei remained in Congress, serving another term as Deputy and being elected Senator twice before she was appointed to the Cabinet in 2011.
