On June 9, 2009 El Ghazaly gave a impressive performance at a meet at Sollentuna, Sweden, registering numerous throws of over 65 meters and taking the title with 66.34 meters. This was the African season’s top throw and made him a potential finalist in at the 2010 World Championships in Athletics. El Ghazaly again made it to the final however, he was unable to secure 9th position.

In 1999, he was approached by the former African shot put champ Nagui Asaad. Asaad was in the process of establishing a throw school, which also had the hammer thrower Mohsen El Anany as well as shot-putter Yasser Fathy. After trying out the various tools and throwing techniques, he decided to go with the discus and began his career in Egypt’s national squad. At the age of 16, in 2000 He was chosen to the Egyptian team to compete in the World Junior Championships, where he placed 17th place. In the same year, he was the winner of the Arab Championships with a throw of 53.07 m. At the 2002 World Junior Championships, a low finish of 10th resulted from an injury to the shoulder. As of 2003, which was the last year as an undergrad, he established the world record for juniors with a throw of 65.88.
His personal best is 66.58 meters, which he achieved on June 7, 2007 at Helsingborg. It is the record currently held by the national team. He was the very first Egyptian athlete to make it to the finals in a competition at the Athletics World Championships.
