She is the second federal councillor whose father had held the same office, after Eugène Ruffy, and the sixth woman to be elected to the Swiss Federal Council. Widmer-Schlumpf earned her bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Zurich in 1981 and then her LLD in the year 1990. She practiced as an attorney from 1987 until 1998. Her appointment to the court district of Trin in 1985, and presided from 1991 until 1997. As an official of the Swiss People’s Party, she was the cantonal legislature of Grisons from 1994 until 1998, and was elected in 1998 to the government of the canton in the role of the very first female president president, as president in 2001 and 2005.

Widmer-Schlumpf has been named an alternative in the race against Christoph Blocher by the Christian Democrat, Social Democrat and Green factions during the Swiss Federal Council elections of 12 December 2007. At the beginning of her campaign, she was awarded 116 votes, as opposed with 111 votes received by Blocher. After the 2nd round she was elected as a federal councillor, receiving an enumeration of 125 votes, the majority of which went to Blocher and 6 votes that were unvalid or empty. She accepted her appointment on the 13th December 2007. She took over Blocher’s former job as the chief of the Department of Justice and Police.

Widmer-Schlumpf was elected Vice President of the Confederation for 2011, alongside President Micheline Calmy-Rey. On 14 December 2011 she was elected President of the Confederation for 2012—the fourth woman to hold the post (after Ruth Dreifuss in 1999, Calmy-Rey in 2007 and 2011 and Doris Leuthard in 2010), and the third woman in a row. Due to a large amount of turnover on the Federal Council, she was the longest-serving member to have not yet served as President.
