Esther Hayut (Hebrew: Aester Hayvt; born 16 October 1953) is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Israel. She was officially sworn in on the 26th of October, 2017 and is scheduled to continue her term in the position of Chief Justice till the end of October 2023.

Hayut was appointed to replace Miriam Naor as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2017 and will remain in the position until 2023 according to the seniority procedure in Israel.

In May 2015, Hayut was named as Chairperson for the Central Election Committee for the 20th Knesset.

Esther “Esti” Avni was born in Herzliya, Israel, in the Shaviv ma’abara (today the Yad HaTesha neighborhood) to Yehuda and Yehudit Avni. They were the two Romanian Holocaust survivors. Her parents divorced when she was just a child and her father fled into England. United Kingdom. She was raised in the home of her grandparents within the Neve Amal neighborhood of Herzliya. At the age of 17 she relocated to Eilat to reside with her mother who was married again. She graduated from the high school at Eilat in the year 1971. After graduation she was drafted to the Israel Defense Forces, where she was part of the band for the military from Central Command. After being discharged of the military, Hayut attended law school at Tel Aviv University, graduating in 1977. While studying law she also met the man she married, David Hayut, with whom she had two sons. Hayut was a part-time employee with the Law Firm with Haim Yosef Zadok, a former Israeli Minister of Justice who continued to work as an associate attorney between 1977 between 1977 and 1985. After she left this firm Hayut established an office on her own with her husband, which specialized in tort and commercial law.

In March 1990, Hayut was appointed a judge at the Tel Aviv Magistrate Court, and was later named as a judge in the Tel Aviv District Court where she was appointed a judge in 1997. In March 2003, Hayut was appointed as a justice in the Supreme Court of Israel, which she was appointed to at the end of March.
