The work was the study of a general technique for developing both fixed-parameter tractable exact algorithms and approximation algorithms for a class of algorithmic problems on graphs.

In 2016, he became a fellow at the Association for Computing Machinery. He was given an honorary doctorate by Bard College in 2017.

Demaine graduated with a bachelor’s degree when he was 14 years old and was enrolled at Dalhousie University in Canada, and he completed the PhD in the University of Waterloo by the age of 20. older. Demaine’s PhD dissertation, which dealt with research in the area of computational origami was written by the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Anna Lubiw and Ian Munro. The work was awarded by the Canadian Governor General’s gold Medal by the University of Waterloo and the NSERC Doctoral Prize (2003) for the most outstanding research and dissertation in Canada. The work of this thesis was later integrated in the book Geometric Folding Algorithms on the maths of folding paper together with Joseph O’Rourke in 2007.
