Eric Godard (born March 7 1980) is an Canadian retired professional right winger of ice hockey that played for the National Hockey League with the New York Islanders, Calgary Flames and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Godard was a well-known enforcer due to his athletic approach to play, and for often dropping gloves. His nickname was “The Hand of God”.

The 2005-06 NHL season, Godard recorded career-highs in games, averaging 57. He also recorded 100 minutes of penalty time for the first-time (finishing on 115). Godard was also able to score his first goal in his NHL career and finished the season scoring four goals. On the 3rd of January in the 3rd of January, Godard was suspended for punching Carolina Hurricanes forward Justin Williams. In the offseason, he joined Calgary Flames Calgary Flames as a free agent on the 10th of August the 10th of August.

Godard again set career highs in games (74) and penalty minutes (171) with Calgary in the 2007-08 NHL season and also played in his first playoff game, dressing in five in the Flames’ first round series with the San Jose Sharks. The Flames choose not to re-sign Godard though and on July 1, 2008, he signed a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

On July 12, 2011, he signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars and played the 2011–12 season with the AHL’s Texas Stars. The first year of his contract was two-way and the second was one-way.

Godard was a bit more active in the 2003-04 season with the Islanders and was a part of 31 games while recording the 97 minutes of penalty time. The NHL lockout in 2004-05 Godard returned to with the Sound Tigers in the AHL playing in 75 games with 18 points and racking up 295 penalty minutes.

Godard played as a junior player for his team, the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League. He was not drafted and released as a free agent with the Florida Panthers on September 24 1999. After being invited up to the American Hockey League on April 1st, 2000 with the Louisville Panthers, Godard was involved in his first professional fight, taking against Todd Fedoruk of the Philadelphia Phantoms. Godard was never a part of his team the NHL Panthers though and on June 22nd, 2002, he was dealt to New York Islanders for a third-round pick (previously purchased by Gregory Campbell).

Godard has made the NHL debut for the Islanders on the 17th of October 2002, in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers. In the following game on the 6th of December, Godard recorded his first ever fight in his career with Tie Domi, a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Godard was only a few times active throughout the remainder of the season in a bouncing among his team of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL and the Islanders.

In three seasons with the Penguins, Godard saw his playing time diminish from 71 games in 2008–09 to 45 games in the 2009–10 to 19 in 2010–11. Over those three seasons, Godard recorded 10 points and 352 penalty minutes while also winning the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009.
