Emanuel Augustus is one of the most popular and richest Boxer who was born on January 2, 1975 in United States. The biggest victory of Augustus’s career, in terms of ratings was his fight against Carlos Wilfredo Vilches on July 19 2002. Augustus was able to take the fight with only 2 days’ notice following Vilches’ opponent, Vince Phillips, pulled out because of a groin injury. Vilches had a record of 37-1-1-2 the time , and was a highly ranked fighter. In the match, Vilches wanted to keep Augustus from gaining ground by delivering a hard jab. Augustus continued to put pressure on Vilches and hit left-handed counters over his head on Vilches left jab. A cut was opened close to the left eye of Vilches and led to an unexpected eighth-round stoppage victory for Augustus. The victory elevated Augustus to the second world ranking within the International boxing Federation light welterweight division. But, Augustus followed with four decision defeats and one controversial draw against difficult opponents, including Omar Gabriel Weis, over whom Vilches had already won.

Augustus started his boxing career under the name of his birth Emanuel Burton. In 2001, after his parents were married, Burton adopted his father’s name as his last name, Augustus. He kept the name “YA”, short for his middle name, Ya’kov. Emanuel is often seen on ESPN2’s boxing show Tuesday Night Fights and its counterpart Friday Night Fights.

On April 2, 2004, Augustus became the IBA light welterweight champion defeating Alex Trujillo by unanimous decision.

Augustus achieved a measure of fame after his bout against Courtney Burton on July 6, 2004, which he lost by controversial close decision. The state of Michigan investigated the points verdict for Burton, but did not overturn the result. Augustus demanded a rematch, and got it, avenging his loss to Burton on September 1, 2006, when he stopped Burton in the eighth round on ESPN with the help of a left hook to the body. The rematch win was ironic, because Augustus was disallowed a knockdown from a left hook to the body in their first fight after referee Dan Kelley claimed instead the knockdown was a caused by an illegal low blow. The punch actually landed on Burton’s beltline, which is termed ‘the border’ in professional boxing refereeing.

His fight with “Irish” Micky Ward on July 13th of 2001 was selected as 2001’s ESPN “Fight of the Year” in addition to being named the”2001″ Ring magazine Fight of the Year. In June 2008, ESPN announced that the fight was being considered for the “Fight of the Decade” award. Augustus was also called “ESPN’s Most Memorable Fighter”.

Emanuel Augustus (born Emanuel Ya’kov Burton on January 2, 1975) was an American former professional boxer from the city in Brownsville, Texas, known as “The Drunken Master”, who participated from 1994 to 2011and was well-known for his entertaining style of boxing and his irksome showboating style that was designed to make opponents look foolish in the boxing ring. He was a top- level competitor during his entire career.
