She also serves as an official of the New Democrat Caucus’s Critic for the Department of Finance, the Executive Council Office, the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as well as The Department of Economic Development, the Department of Justice, the Department of Highways and Public Works The Public Service Commission, the Department of Tourism and Culture and The Yukon Workers Compensation Health and Safety Board along with Yukon Liquor Corporation. Hanson announced her intent to resign as Leader of the Yukon New Democrats in November 2018, though she will remain MLA for Whitehorse Centre. A leadership convention to replace her is expected on May 4, 2019.
During both the 32nd and 33rd Legislative Assemblies, Hanson served on the Members’ Services Board and the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. She Chaired the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in the 33rd Legislative Assembly (2011-2016).

She was the Yukon Director for Land Claims and Indian Government in the federal government up to the year 2003. She then was appointed Regional Director General for Indian and Northern Affairs Canada in the Yukon and was charged with restructuring its regional operations in order to be in line with the presence of federal officials “post land claims and devolution”. She left the position in 2007.
On the 26th of September in 2009 Hanson received praise as the leader for the Yukon NDP, following the resignation of the previous chief Todd Hardy, who had quit due to a long-running battle with leukemia. In the wake of Hardy’s passing in July, 2010 Hanson won the subsequent by-election held on the 13th of December 2010. The election was held in Whitehorse Centre by a large margin. Hanson was able to hold her seat in the election of 2011 and led to the Yukon New Democrats from third status to Official Opposition which included six of the 19 legislature seats.
On November 22, 2018, Hanson announced her intent to resign as Leader of the Yukon NDP.
