On August 3 of 2017, President Trump proposed Copeland to be a Judge in the United States Tax Court, to fill the vacancy left from the Judge James Halpern, who retired on the 16th of October in 2015. It was reported that the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing about her nomination on June 12, 2018, and then voted down her nomination with unanimous consent on June 28, 2018. On August 28, 2018 the nomination was confirmed through a voice vote. Her first day in office was October 12, 2018.

The 4th of May, 2015 the president Obama announced the nomination of Copeland to be an Judge for the United States Tax Court, to fill the vacant seat left from judge Diane Kroupa, who retired on June 16th on the 16th of June, 2014. She was a witness before the United States Senate Committee on Finance on January 29th the 29th of January, 2016. On April 18 in 2016 her nomination was approved to the committee with 26-0 votes. The nomination was withdrawn on the 3rd day of January in 2017 after the conclusion of the 114th Congress.
