He defeated the former champion with a majority victory in their 10-round match. The win earned him a bit of interest from the press for boxing and earned him an opportunity to fight Wladimir Klitschko later in the year.

At the age 20 at the age of 20, he began his professional journey as boxer. His first fight was with Anthony Mack (who was also making his professional debut on the same night) the 24th of February the 24th of February, 1996. Castillo took the win via first-round knockout. He continued to fight off and on into the new millennium, and at times even taking 3 years away from the sport.
Although his record has been uneven, he managed to win without losing until April of 2005. His only negative record to date was a draw with Terry Pitts (who later changed his name to Sajad Aziz) on November 13, 1998 in the famous Mahi Shrine Temple Auditorium in Miami. Aziz was successful in scoring knockdowns during both the 5th and 4th rounds, however Castillo was able to fight back and secure an overwhelming draw. The fights were held at the cruiserweight level.
