He performed in Charles Mingus’ Epitaph in 1989. He was an instructor in drums, percussion and jazzmobile from 1994 to 2002. He also taught at the University of the Arts Philadelphia in 1994 to 1996. From 1992 to 2000, he was substitute instructor at The New School. BlueNoise Studio, Frederick, Maryland is his production and artistic direction. He teaches hip-hop and culture at Pennsylvania State University, as well as African- and African American studies and Integrative Arts.

He was a member the St. Louis Metropolitan Jazz Quintet’s early 1980s. He worked with St. Louis musicians such as Arthur Blythe and Andrew Hill. He founded Third Kind of Blue, an avant-garde jazz band with Anthony Cox & John Purcell after collaborating with Woody Shaw. He recorded in the 1990s with Billy Bang and Hamiet Bluiett as well as Courtney Pine, Sonny Fortune, Gunther Schuller and the World Saxophone Quartet.
