Elisabeth Kalko was an ecologist with a bachelor’s degree in biology at the university of Tubingen in Germany that then led to a doctorate degree in 1991. Her thesis topic was the ecolocation and hunting behavior that of the three European dwarf bat species Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Schreber 1774), Pipistrellus nathuslii (Keyserling and Blasius, 1839) and Pipistrellus kuhli (Kuhl 1819) out in nature. Her research was conducted as a fellows with the National Merit Foundation (‘Studienstiftung’ 1984-1987 1988-1990). From 1991 until 1993, Kalko was awarded an NATO postdoc stipend to conduct study in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C. (USA) and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama. Between 1993 and 1997, she worked in the DFG programs ‘Mechanism for maintaining the diversity of tropical species’ (research group) and “Diversity and the dynamics and structure of bats from Neotropical regions’. She also received the DFG Heisenberg rehabilitation stipend from 1997 until 1999. The rehabilitation process concluded in 1999, in Tubingen.
in 1999 Kalko got the position of staff scientist in the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. She spent significant time on field expeditions as well as at research institutions across the US like the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., in the Congo and other countries. In 2000, Kalko held a joint appointment, not just at STRI but she also served as director and professor full-time at the Institute of Experimental Ecology at the University of Ulm in Germany which is the city in which Albert Einstein was born. One of her scientists comprised one of Germany’s top German Entomologists, Heiko Bellmann. She also maintained ties to AMNH. American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) as Research Associate.
