Don Conoscenti (born September 13, 1955) is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist originally from Chicago, Illinois. He began his career at the age of 12 playing drums. He later received an instrument as a present from a cousin to mark his graduation from 8th grade. Conoscenti was renowned for his unique approach to using several and partial capos on the acoustic instrument, and released videos for instruction on Capo Abuse and Guitar Techniques in 2001. He has played with a variety of prominent musicians like Kristian Bush David Wilcox, Ellis Paul, John Mayer, Nils Lofgren, Robert Mirabal, Bill Miller (musician) as well as The Indigo Girls.

Conoscenti quit Chicago for a second time and toured extensively across the nation, learning diverse styles of music at every destination. The year 1976 was the time that Conoscenti started his own rock group as a counter clerk at the first Ben & Jerry’s in Vermont. Conoscenti began learning the blues during after-hours jam sessions with the founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. He also landed his first pay-per-view jobs as a singer/songwriter and as a sideman. He also had his first recording session.

Conoscenti befriended writer David Mamet, and also worked with members of the politically active Bread and Puppet Theater. For most of the late 1980s, Conoscenti did not play or perform. He lived a solitary life in California, Martha’s Vineyard, and Colorado, and occupied himself with various spiritual pursuits.

In 1991 Conoscenti moved to Atlanta to revisit acoustic music. He first played at The Freight Room in Decatur, GA, which was one of the favored places to play acoustic music in the Atlanta area at the time, along with the Trackside Tavern. The Trackside Tavern was managed by Eddie Owens, who went on to open Eddie’s Attic in Decatur in 1992.

In late the year 1976 Conoscenti relocated in the direction of Stowe, Vermont and worked in the kitchen at the Lodge on Mt. Mansfield. He was a mentor by the blues of wine Steward Arnold Carbone who went on to become the Director for Research & Development for Ben & Jerry’s. Conoscenti along with Carbone were also part of a blues duo named Chicago Don and Little Arnold.

Conoscenti was born in the Chicago area , and first began playing drums in garage band and flute in the high school’s symphony orchestra. His musical influences varied when he was at home, he listened to the big band music of his mother as his father listened to music by Frank Sinatra, Vic Damone as well as Tony Bennett. Conoscenti also was a fan of Chicago Radio station WLS- FM that played a lot of Detroit “Motown” music. He purchased his first guitar 50 dollars in the year 1974, in Boulder, Colorado at a garage sale. He then began singing and playing in public. Self-taught musician, Conoscenti said he learned playing instruments by watching the other players and their performances. Conoscenti began to explore the psychedelics and would spend long moments in the time-sacred meditation room at the Naropa Institute in Boulder during the summer when Ram Dass was doing a residency at. This was following the publication of Dass’s seminal work Be Here Now which was published in 1971. The summer of 1971 culminated in an awakening to the spiritual world that led Conoscenti on a spiritual journey. In the late year of 1971 Conoscenti traveled by hitchhike to California where the singer continued to write songs and played guitar. Don’s spiritual education continued in the San Jose barrio where he did meditation, fasted and expanded his cultural horizons.

In 1975, Conoscenti came back to Chicago in the year 1975, where he began to play hootenannies for The Earl of Old Town as well as at Steve Goodman’s Folk Club Somebody Else’s Troubles. Conoscenti was a frequent visitor to these clubs alongside Goodman as well as John Prine, who had recently signed with Stax Records. In 1978, Conoscenti formed a band called Zucchini Brothers, with music that was original and at times theatrical. Vermont in the 1970s was a hotbed of writers, actors, thinkers, musicians, much like Greenwich Village in the 1960s.
