His father Mikhail who was who was a Soviet Table Tennis champion from 1982 relocated the family of his parents to Germany just a few days following Dimitrij had been born.

On 22 September 2010, Ovtcharov had been suspended by the German Table Tennis Federation (DTTB) due to a positive A-sample test for Clenbuterol that may be used as a performance-enhancing substance. Ovtcharov himself denied any doping allegations and demanded a B-sample test that was still positive. After hearings and further investigation the hair sample provided by Ovtcharov did not show any evidence of clenbuterol abuse or adolescence. DTTB then voted unanimously to end the suspension on October 15th, 2010. The decision was then endorsed by ITTF.

Ovtcharov married Swedish table tennis player Jenny Mellström in 2013. They had a daughter, Emma, after the Rio Olympics.

Ovtcharov has won three bronze and one silver medals during the Olympics between 2008 and 2016. He was ranked first from January to February 2018 and is currently 11th on the planet in the world by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
