Kalka has appeared on numerous shows, with his bandoneon performing his own songs including in 1988 when he sang his subject “Noch habe ich die Freiheit zu lieben” (I continue to can love with my heart). He has also performed at the festival of songwriters in Burg Waldeck. The tracks “are not without a bitter aftertaste. He puts his finger on compromises that everybody engages in almost every day of their life, or feel compelled to close. Former ideals are often forgotten”. He has composed lyrics for folk music and wrote on “The revival of the East German singer-songwriter scene”. His performances have led him across Poland, Belarus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria and Denmark. His songs are available on many CDs.
Dieter Kalka’s first book was called “Eine ubersensible Regung unterm Schuhabsatz” (An Over Sensitive Movement under the Heel) released in 1987 under the name Samizdat. In 1990, he was the coordinator of the first Alternative Leipzig Book Fair. In the Association of German writers he initiated in 1995, in Leipzig the German-Polish poets’ celebration “wortlust”. The translator has also been translating Polish poets’ works into German. The dark GDR reality is the theme of the book “Der ungepfluckte Apfelbaum”, released in 1998. The works of Kalka have appeared on German, Polish, Austrian, Canadian and Belarusian literary magazines.

Dieter Kalka started his study of mathematics and electrical engineering in the Technische Universitat Ilmenau in 1978. In the year 1980, he was forced to leave his studies because of the publication and distribution of illegally published publications. He was part in the popular group “Feuertanz”, founded in 1978. Later, in 1984, the group was formed by Dieters Frohe Zukunft (Dieter’s Happier Future). He composed his own folk songs along alongside Uwe Schimmel who played the French trumpet, Uta Mannweiler playing the violin, and his own instrument was the Bandoneon. In this group, he arranged the illegal artists’ gathering “Ringelfolk” in Wurzen, that was uncensored. The promotional materials that were not authorized to promote this, and many other activities, was duplicated at the lab of Petra Lux.
Dieter Kalka is “the fiercest among the Leipzig song singers”. Since the mid- 1980s , he has been a singer on a contract basis and has performed in numerous occasions the Chanson days of Kloster Michaelstein (GDR-open Chanson days in the Monastery at Michaelstein). He performed in samizdat productions at the studio private of Hubertus Schmidt back in 1987. Then he collaborated in collaboration with Peter Glaser in 1988 and at the official Kolling studio in Leipzig in 1989. After working in 1987 with Werner Bernreuther in 1987, the artist was awarded a professional certification as a songwriter, and won an award at The Chanson times from The GDR (Chanson times in the city of Frankfurt/Oder) as well as a Prize for the Leipzig Songwriter Workshop, which later was publicly announced because they wanted the organizers to tell him the song he was to sing in the final performance. He has received several scholarships of Saxony and was, for a time, a member of the Independent Writers Association “ASSO” Dresden, the NGL/New Society for Literature, the Writers Association “VS” and the “Forderkreis Freie Literaturgesellschaft Leipzig”.
Kalka was twice in Belarus for the songwriter’s festival “Bardentreffen”, and appeared with his Belarusian colleague Victor Shalkevich. At the Saxon Literature Spring in 2003, he dedicated his “Freiheitslied Nr. 2” (Freedom Song No.2) to his Belarusian colleague Victor Shalkevich in the hope that better times will come. He participated in the German-Polish poets steamer on the border river Oder and the Orpheus Project in Wroclaw, Bad Muskau and Lwówek Śląski. At the poets steamer the Poet’s wedding also took place in 1998 between Dieter Kalka and Zielona Góra fairy tale author, Agnieszka Haupe, at the Frankfurt Oderbrücke.
